OUR HISTORY
As a community of faith, this church has served as a Methodist presence in this vicinity for nearly 200 years. When John Seymour and a handful of families immigrated from the east around 1830, to farm this new territory, they gathered in their barns to worship. But once they build a one-room schoolhouse on the west side of Seymour Lake for their children to use on weekdays, they proceeded to use it for Worship on Sundays for the next forty+ years. Then following the Civil War, a member donated the two acres of property she owned at the corner of Seymour Lake and Sashabaw Roads so that “a proper church could be built.” For several years, the members scrimped and saved, knowing they would need funds to buy the necessary building materials. Finally, in 1874, the congregation stepped out in faith to build the church that has stood at this intersection as a historical landmark for the past 150+ years. With a couple of modifications made in the 1950’s. (An office was added in the attic, and the church was jacked up so that a basement could be dug out from under the church, to make room for a kitchen, two bathrooms, a space for fellowship. and Sunday school classrooms.) Following these modifications, the historic church building continued to serve the member’s needs for another 50 years.
However, as area farms began to make way for suburban subdivisions, church leaders began to anticipate they might soon outgrow the historic church. So when ten acres of adjacent land went up for sale in the 1990s , the members again stepped out in faith to purchase that parcel, with plans to construct a new multipurpose Worship and Fellowship Center (WFC) behind the church one day. Nearly ten years were devoted to fundraising before construction could begin. However the “WFC” was finally completed in 2002. In 2015 a lakefront pavilion was erected on another part of the property. Today our buildings provide space for worship and many other church events, but they also host various community groups, including two AA groups, a Cub Scout Pack, an office for Samaritan Counseling Center of South Eastern Michigan, Red Cross Blood Drives, and in 2024 we became a polling place for voters in Brandon Township.
